I have just built one of these, it works ok. I have tested it so far with a 18f452 and a 12f675

Peter,

Can you please try for me:

Set 12f675 to MCLR internally enabled (in the CONFIG), then try to program it. Does it work? This procedure actually requires VDD control (raise before MCLR). I think it might not work though.

Thanks man,
Buddy

It seems to work fine, I set the oscillator to internal RC no clock and Master Clear Enable to internal, it programmed fine. I also checked to see if I could then reprogram it and it still worked fine.

So I tried an a different hex file. All tests worked.

Hope this helps.

Thanks very much for that Peter. But when I check out Sprut's website, there are about so many versions of his programmer. May I ask which specific one you used that worked? I think he mentioned that there are Beta versions and non-Beta versions of the USB one, just confused me a bit Smiley Sorry for the trouble Smiley

Thanks,
Buddy

It is no trouble, I built the brenner 8 with firmware version 0.7, I use the usburn 1.3 to program the hex

Here is the URL http://www.sprut.de/electronic/pic/projekte/brenner8/index.htm

Hope this helps

Dear Peter,

Really thanks a billion for your info Cheesy. I think I understand it now. Just a tiny little question because I'm just not sure about this:
Do we program the firmware using USburn or do we need a already made programmer to do this?
And I think there are 2 firmware hex files but I dont understand the thing about bootloaders, sorry about it Cheesy

Best regards,

You need to program the firmware using an already built programmer ( the first time ). If you use the firmware with the boot loader you can upgrade the firmware using usburn.

The boot loader is just a bit of code that runs when te programmer is reset, it checks to see if usburn whans to upgrade the firmware, if not the programmer starts as normal. If usburn signals that it wants to upgrade the firmware it writes the new code to the pic starting at addresses after the boot loader code.

All machines are amplifiers

I am also going to try to get a Brenner8 going.
I have a JDM/Olimex clone on breadboard so Im going to see if I can program the 18F2550 with that(!)
I anticipate some struggle.
I will report progress.

I used a olimex pic-pg2 to program the firmware.

Hi

Is it fast programming?
18F452 how much time takes

It is fast, just a few seconds. If you have a hex file to use as a test I would be happy to time it for you.

Hi,

I had bad luck with this programmer.
I build a little double side board based on brenner 8 mini p version, with the firm. 0.6. First to get something working, I had to made a reset on Mclr. Without this, the board like working us the brenner 8 circuit. After completing the board I saw that it's a difference between the brenner 8 and brenner 8 mini. Without the reset on Mclr pin, by toggling the Vpp, Vcc, Data, and Clock, I couldn't see any level changes on the Pic pins, us they are shown on the circuit.
But on the brenner 8 there is a jumper for activating the bootloader. And they wrote that the firmware is same for all of there boards.
The second problem was that I wasn't able to increase the Vpp over 10-10.5 V.
I just manage to increase the programming voltage just by changing the resistor divider value. I decreased the R5 value from 2k2 to 1 k, and finaly I manage to get 12 V us programming voltage, I read an 16f873 chip, and I erased it, but this voltage wasn't so stable. At last i get the information that the chip has Code protection activated.
I checked also with JDM, and IC Prog and get the same result.
Finaly I cleaned all with the WinPic800, and the chip is like working. And I was asking why I need this kind of usb programmer when I have my stable working JDM, Winpic combination?

So my hardware like without any errors ( but i'm sure that i have to increase some trace on the board) but the circuit is not realy working for me.
best wishes

thank's for feedback. I also build it on double side 3x4 cm, but I have to work on it.I think I'll swap to the brenner 8, from mini p version, but not in this year!
