You pay nothing but it component amount and component type are limited.
You can pay post if you want a quick send. if you use standard shipment, it is free.

Microchip will only post to a valid post coded address, but you do need a proper e-mail account, it must be by a ISP.
you maybe able to have a comany sounding name like [email protected]
you dont even need to be a company. but say to them, that you are Smiley

I'am afraid the free sample good days are over a microchip.you can only order 2 items 3 of each and are charged $7.50 usd plus taxes and duties when it gets to you, used to be 5 items 3 of each or more and you could place 2 orders like that and shipping duties everything was free.
So it look's kinda costly to me when you got to get out your credit card to order them  free samples  Cry
and then pay more when they arrive on your doorstep (duties & taxes) it's probably cheaper just to buy it from microchip direct and quicker.

bbarney,

Yes, you are very right. No more free sample, it cost alot when you multiply by the quantity you want to order for sample. Tax and shipping are extra. Boy, where is the good old day when we could just order 3 to 5 pcs of each samples and they will ship to you free? If we all stop order sample and stop using the PIC than free sample would available.

Well, we created a monstor and now the monstor kick on our ASS hu! hu!

To keep the cost down, keep track of what you need and place them in one order, that way you can save a little on shipping.

That's the problem 1 order is 2 items of 3 pieces each so it's 7.50usd for each of those but they allow 10 orders every 40 days so I guess you could get 60 pics for 75 usd but I'll bet the taxes & duties would sink the ship on that order.Microchip always got away without the duties by saying the order was worth $ 1 or really low , I wonder if they will still say the value is low or full price ?

Read from microchipdirect.com/ShippingInfo.aspx, I see China is the most expense:

Ship to Mainland China single pack cost $70.47, three packs cost $211.41 and five packs cost $352.35  in USD. I feel sorry for those guys.

I bet there will be a big drop in sale order in the coming year and Microchip will have to think about that.

Microchip stoped giving samples for free, for the simple reason some idiot was selling them on e-bay and then getting microchip to send them direct to the pesron who brought them, One way to make 110% profit,

It was not long before they caught him out, Now everybody suffers.

Register to Microchip as a commercial user.
Then ring and speak to your local Microchip rep.
If you can convince them of your "genuine" usage, then ALL your samples are free again.

But what if you're not a commercial user? What if you're just a hobbyist? What do you say then?

What do you say then?

Well, aren't you the inventor of XYZ Super-duper-every-house-hold-should-get-one machine?
Even a hobbyist can start a large scale use, provided you are making something worthwhile..
Most "big" company starts small.
