So, I decided to try to help at least a little. Unfortunately I have no hands-on experience on the WM8731 chip. However, it seems to me, that the control interface can be configured as a "2-wire SPI" -interface. That is same as I2C, if I am not mistaken. And I2C is pretty standard stuff, and thus help should be easy to find. You should look for ready-made and tested I2C solution for PIC18F2550, and configure then the codec for I2C 2-wire interface. The HW connection for I2C is trivial, and PIC would be the I2C master, and communicating with the codec through I2C protocol: Between chips, data line goes to data line and clock is connected to clock line - those two wires carry all control necessary. Just remember to have a pull-up resistor on I2C data and clock lines - 4k7 or thereabout to the VCC is usually OK.
