Connect power supply with 3.8V-4.2V,2A is important and it will automatically connect to network if you inserted your SIM card.

the sim card was inserted after several minutes of testing hooks up the network and stays connected for several minutes but after switching off the system returns to having problems

  but I'm afraid the problem is the battery voltage as zawmintun1 writes and a bit to the limit

The power supply range of SIM800 is from 3.4V to 4.4V. Recommended voltage is 4.0V. The transmitting
burst will cause voltage drop and the power supply must be able to provide sufficient current up to 2A. For the
VBAT input, a bypass capacitor (low ESR) such as a 100 μF.(I use 100uF tantalum and  470uF elco)
For the VBAT input, a 100uF Tantalum capacitor (CA low ESR) and a 1uF~10uF Ceramics capacitor
and 33pF and 10pF capacitors can effectively eliminate the high frequency
interference. A 5.1V/500mW Zener diode is strongly recommended, the diode can prevent chip from damaging
by the voltage surge. These capacitors and Zener diode should be placed as close as possible to SIM800

I have no problems after adding this capacitors.

The SIM800L module requires strict power supply voltage level and current capacity. It is safer never to exceed 4.2V and prevent going below 3.6V from experience.
You can power with a 5V 2A SMPS but you would want to scale down the voltage by adjusting the reference voltage to the shunt regulator. Or simply use a lithium battery.

The power i use for 800L module is 4 volts using the LM317 regulator with heatsink. I have seen these Sim800 and 800L modules dont work new sim cards. It works fine with old sim cards of BSNL and Idea but doesn't detect the network with newer sim cards and any sim cards of Airtel . Is it so that these are not compatible with 3G or 4G networks?

The SIM800 modules are only compatible with 2G networks.
