Title: Recommendations for higher voltage power supply
Post by: zac on July 27, 2019, 01:02:58 01:02
I have several variable power supplies, but none output higher than 50V.  All are linear types with a conventional transformer that provides isolation so can be used in series if desired.

I'm thinking about purchasing a higher voltage (>120V) variable power supply since there are some reasonably priced models available now.  I don't think I would use any voltage about 600V and that would mainly be used to test solar charge controllers, but it would need to be able to operate from 120VAC (60 hz).  Any recommendations?

I did a quick search and found these:

i think buy a ready made power supply instead of doing RND from scratch there are some idea's make switch mode or linear regulator driver to control the IGBT for high voltage and current. T.I and LT have some voltage regulator driver chip that can drive the IGBT transistor for high voltage control.

Have a look on ebay for old electrophoresis power supplies, I have a few BioRad units that go to 200V @ 2A and another that goes to 3kV @ 400mA, they might work out cheaper than a new unit.

here is the power supply that I use 0 to 400 volts max and 5A limit in programmable current

Read https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/showthread.php?t=94181 before going for an electrophoresis power supply. Seem to be two major issues - at least on the referenced model - but may be generic.

Output voltage is centred on ground so both sides are potentially lethal.
Very long time constant in the regulation feedback loop and useless with capacitative load.

check aliexpress. the prices are low and the quality is reasonable.
