Hello all just wondering what sort of multimeter i should buy i have about £20 but doubt i will need to spend that much i just want a fairly good all-rounder to testing small circuits nothing big or anything any ideas where to get one; maplin ? rapid electronics?

Just buy a used brand name unit off eBay. You'll get more for your money. Just stay away from the cheap Chinese import type.

Radioshack has some decent inexpensive multimeters.
Also, albeit a tad more pricey, Amprobe makes some very nice multimeters.  Lots of functions, including capacitance, inductance, frequency counter, etc..  I'm going to buy the 37XR-A myself.

thank you all of you but johnny666 i am in the uk so i cant purchase anything from america without having to wait 1 month or longer or pay huge amounts of money for postage. i will take a look on ebay and have a look on RS thanks again all

Be aware that I looked through www.ebay.co.uk and most of the multimeters were the crap Chinese import type. Be careful, eBay is the place to get ripped off. I've been buying off eBay for years and have been very sucessful but I'm still amazed at the variety of scams.

Maplin have a sale on right now, so you may be able to get one from them cheap. I just ordered a clamp meter for £7 from them. You don't get much for £7 (about $14), but at that price, I just couldn't resist it.

On ebay you will find a brand thru traders called 'Sinometer'

Usually a bench type meter (M9803R) but reasonably priced.

You can usually find a used FLUKE or METEX meter in that price range on ebay...you'll be glad you stuck with a known name!
