Are you looking to build or buy?  The RF modules from Asia (found on Ebay) really can't be beaten for price vs size...  They are certainly nothing to brag about but they are fun to play with for tinkering...

here you go i did same task couple of year back to transmit data from PC USB Port and COM Port via RF, these module are surface mounted RF Transmitter with direct Micro-controller interface support hope this will help you with your project uploaded data sheet to mega share along with application note.

Build.... so look for a scratch... of both TX and RX....something low cost but that can become industrial...
to transfer packet just when needed...unidirectional....with a receiver ultra low power...battery oriented...

SadMan, I have checked the Linx doc you provided me.

Nice approach!!!

My goal is anyhow a receiver battery operated...this mean a received with 'wake up on radio' technology included.

Had a bad experience with linx  - the TX and RX's would pair ok and work for days sometimes weeks, and then *poof* they get unpaired something on the TX side would change the key. TX side circuit was very simple LiPo, switches, and antenna, along with some esd protection, would always be near full charged when the event would happen - even though low battery should be OK. Going through the TX regen key and pair process again cleared up the problem. It was always a gradual thing IE one switch would stop working then next and then none.

After a while I gave up on solving that
Linx didn't have any useful comments on the problem - although they did discontinue that part.
Granted they do have newer products, but I'm not coming back after that
