I need to know when driving a stepper motor with UCN5804 or l297+l298 .. we need to give a pule .. let 40 khz  a direction value .. and enable pin .. then how will I know I many ratations the motor rotated ... I couldnt clarify it from the data sheet ... plz explain ... thanks in advance...

In CNC machines the table bed and gears are pre calculated . There is a staring point where you can refer the tool or what ever as the 0 coordinates. Since you ask for stepper motors its this way . Other high speed servos have an encoder at the back which gives ttl values for rotation.
