Just about all the search engines are offlined as of me checking today, the ones that are not are next to useless. Did some kind of ultimatum come down regarding December 1?

I used to use filehost.org a lot and it seemed to always return good search hits on most of the filehosts out there. I never had need for anything else until now, so maybe these sites died gradually.

As of today, filehost only returns movies and TV, zero knowledge content like books, etc.

You'll find a listing of the search sites I went through that are similar to filehost here under the "rapidshare search engine' section:

http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/100-alternative-search-engines-you-should-know/

(Don't go to filecrop)

Anyone have a favorite filehosting search site that is still up and actually returns useful searches for the kind of content the folks here enjoy? I went through just about all of the ones listed on the hongkiat blog, none seem useful, a good number are dead/parked.

This will make, and is making, me grumpier than usual if I can't replace my favorite search tool.

The nice thing about filehost was it gave you the referring site as well. But, diva is better than nothing, I guess.

My post above was tongue in cheek as it was cyber day

// there is still a few of the old ones, some with new names, but with the usa and uk ISP being sat upon I can only see it going underground, like in the days before the internet. when most engineers used bbs and vines.
I can see it going to hidden channels that have a front door and a door keeper that knows who to let pass, even up a few levels to keep out the leech element.
I was talking to a friend that was on winmx, and they still have a hidden room but served now via a well known BT hosting servive.

Can we call this a turning point where the government is gaining edge over illegal software distribution. It is not that the ware dealers are unable to fight back but there is just a general lack of interest and loss of appetite. Plus, recent arrests have probably spreaded fear among them. They tend to double check before attempting to crack something. In other words, bad times for information sharing. Just imagine what would happen if this small community went completely out of business. They are either creative developers themselves or they are indirectly responsible for the development of novel products etc.
