Hello Maxpayne,

There are many from manufacturers such as TI, NXP and Maxim in particular. Google 'I2C parallel port expander'.

Are the IC2 lines locked into being dedicated IC2 lines, or could you simply turn them into digital I/O and skip needing another clip?

 TI Home > Semiconductors > Interface > I2C > I2C IO Expander >
PCF8574A (ACTIVE)

Remote 8-Bit I/O Expander for I2C-Bus

that seems to be the simplist, but you only use 2 out of the 8 outputs

I would use a PIC10 in SOT23
Add a simple logic program and it would do the required function.

I was going to suggest the same, especially since I keep an handful of 6 and 8 pin PICs on hand just for trivial task like this, the SOT23 micros are "so cute" that I actually get a kick out of using them Smiley ...  I personally use micros as Swiss Army Knife ICs all the time, for me it's just cost effective to have one chip in the drawer that can do 1000s of things vs having 1000s of chips in the drawer that can only do one thing, but I know a lot of people frown upon that and are adamant that people use dedicated fixed solid state chips for such task...

I considered advising an 8 pin PIC, but decided its a wole different ball game , and 100 times more complicated than a $0.50 chip where its all done for you, rather than a weeks work, debugging, programming etc etc

dont forget, maxpayne wont have any experience with rolling his own, so it would take a week !!!

Yeah experience and coding ability does come into play for sure, it could certainly take you from a few painless minutes of development and debugging to weeks, although I cringe at the idea that it could take weeks...
