Details of QED vs Minelab detector - Anyone want to do battle

Here you will find the build Details for the elusive QED, Deep Seeking Pulse Induction Metal Detector with Active ground balancing. The leaked details included will allow you to build the main control box of the detector which will connect directly to Minelab and compatible coils (as if we need to know were MeTaL is  )

The QED was a project built to go head to head with Minelabs top of the range machines ($$$)

This battle has been going on for so long, it needs an ending, just to *** up the trolls.

The designer of the QED stopped working on the machine in early 2013 when Minelab sued him to stop further development of the machine that would have hurt sales their high end gold detectors.

Unfortunately, that should have been the end of the QED, but one of the testers helping the designer leaked the code to one of his friends who also wanted to build the machine and thanks to that tester, here we are!

So, we present to you the full details of the QED including the hardware PCB files,Schematics, Microcontroller code... Enough for you to build you own machine.

A few years ago I was involved in a lot of mostly theoretical talk about the capturing and analysis of pulse induction signals to improve discrimination. It never got much past that stage though and we all moved on.

Instead of making my own, I ended up buying a used Fisher F75.

After owning it for nearly three years, I finally made my first profit with it...


...by selling it for more than I paid for it!

I do not know both, but once i ever look closely on a famous gold detector board - what i found is it use high class passive components. I still have my notes on it, have a see, sorry i have to hide most part of the pcb image.

Instead of arguing on an old technology - use the latest :
Ti LDC1000 IC who can be use as a very sensitive metal detector with the add of a micro controller and a display
You can detect metal from distance and even distinguish from one another.

why would you use a Ti LDC1000 IC when you can build a professional detector that blows it away in every regard?

This detector is a modern gold detector with ground balancing supposedly comparable to the latest minelab machines which cost $6500
It can ground balance in the most mineralized ground, if you look at the file from PicKit you can see it has the full schematics, board layouts and micro code!

I am going to build this for sure!

If you plan on going to Australia to do some detecting, do yourself a fasvour and build this detector. Buy a good used Coiltek, nuggetfinder ot Minelab coil from eBay and start building!
There's a lot of people doing mods on this schematic on geotech and other forums that are well worth checking out. Compared to the $6500 Minelab machines, this has the capacity to be so much better.

There's enough information in the file to build one from scratch!

Does this QED really works?

I did some search and found mixed opinion, one said this one as vapourware (?)

Any other good discriminating pulse induction detector around?

It works... everything you need to build it is in the files. The reason it was called vapourware is because there was lots of rumours of its existence, but nothing that was ever publicly released for it and that's because minelab sued the inventor to stop any further progress on it.

Its a good detector, up there with the best you can buy for gold in mineralized ground!

I made a coil myself once, for the Practical Electroncis Magnum (I think) - unless you really enjoy it and have much better mechanical skills than me (quite possible) I would suggest buying one. If the Magnum would work with a commercial coil it might do better than it does with my DIY one.

I'm really curious about the QED too. I recall the arguments surrounding it years ago. If cash (or rather its lack) weren't such a problem now I would be very tempted to have a board made and build one of these. Always wanted to try a really good PI machine.

There are people working on alternatives based on the QED on other forums, but nothing is available yet from what I've seen.

The problem is that nobody will release designs they've done. Its a machine that is more than capable and I know of 1 unit that's been built but I don't know how it performed.

Couple opinions wanted  before I pick parts -
The code looks ok and builds, the schematic couple issues -
1) there is an analog spst x 4 switch with no part #, perhaps it is ADG5212 ? what do you think ?
2) there is also TI LME49990, which is no longer made - I was thinking OPA1611 as replacement
3) now for sense coil there are a lot of variations here with a lot of magic, since this is PI and two coil (TX + RX) connector is made, perhaps the choices can be narrowed down. As much as I like playing with litz wire I'm tempted to buy off the shelf from different unit
4) dsp looks like 33FJ128MC804
5) LCD looks like 3 digits * 7 segment, 2 x DP and a COM, GND, and 3.3V
maybe something like lumex lcd-s301c31tf but with backlight
