Dual Power Supply LM317 LM337 with Pass Transistor 2N5884 2N5886 0 to 40V 20A Schematic I'm planning to build for testing DIY audio amps. Big heatsink required.

Change R7 R5, R8 R6 ratio for desired output voltage range. Change R11 R12 for desired current limiting

Feel free to comment or improve.

Here I think a LM723 variant would be better in any way to much of the same price. Like adjustable current limiting. Both variants would be linear though

Use LM350 insted of LM317 it is the same but can handle 3A insted of 1A

You might want to think about some type of output protection. I've seen these types of designs damaged when a device is attached to its output that already has a voltage on it. Examples are batteries (eg you use the power supply to charge a small battery), or something with a still charged capacitor (some piece of equipment with a big cap on its input). That applied voltage ends up damaging the power supply output transistor. A simple solution is a series diode on the power supply output, although that has the obvious disadvantage of a voltage drop & gets hot at high currents. Fancier protection circuits using MOSFETs are also possible.

Yes all that will be true for the device itself. But none of that will be true for any external pass transistor which are doing all the heavy work and really need it Wink
