I doubt it would work on a pressed CD, since it would only remove the aluminum and not the pits.

Rather it may be called removing the alluminium foil layer and not "erasing". As we can see the two electrodes produce high voltage which takes the alluminium foil of the CD as conductor and thus sparks and the turbulance peels off the layer.
