That's tragic... Two down in one week, we are running out of heroes quicker than I thought...

Get it right, ferret bait.

We can always make more heroes.
That's true:

However, analog designers that knew as much as Pease and Williams? Not so much

I've learned a lot from Pease & Williams over the years, its such a tragedy for the analog community.

The ironic thing is, didn't Pease write a book on safe driving? I also heard that he was not wearing a seatbelt.
I just can't believe it!

posted by Shafer on Slashdot:

"Bob was one of the most clearheaded problem solvers out there, regardless of domain. When I was designing high-voltage CRT drivers, his books and columns were invaluable. When I moved on to digital, then FPGA system architecture, then management, again his thinking was almost always mappable in some way to the problems at hand.

When he wrote a self-published book on driving, _How to Drive Into Accidents and How Not To_, I bought and read that too (472 pages on driving).

For those that say Bob was not serious about seatbelts because he apparently was not wearing one, he talked in detail about how that Beetle had rotted belts, how he had purchased nylon webbing to repair them, and his difficulties in finding a good, robust way to sew them. He made the point that a seatbelt "holds you down firmly and helps you AVOID having an accident." [Bob's emphasis]

The man was not perfect, and I'm sure his actions did not always match his intent (did you ever see pictures of his desk? or the back seat of the Beetle?), but we've lost a great thinker, and he will be greatly missed."

Find a seatbelt - now try to cut it with scissors...

The five point harness is a great thing to hold you in place while your legs snap like pretzels.  If you don't have a chrome-moly cage in the old bug, which is where the harness would actually work, you're toast if you hit anything.

I've been reading he pretty much rolled straight down the driveway into the tree, so I'll post what the coroner says if I come across it. Most people feel he had a heart attack or stroke from climbing the hill after he got to the memorial service he was late for, then likely got pissed off as he was getting in the car because everybody already left. Given circumstances, could also have been suicide....
