and it works fine. You have to use the zener diodes on D-/+ in order for the PC USB ports to recognize USBasp without problems.

USBasp supports many AVR chips. Where did you read that USBasp doesn't support programming ATmega32?

With USBprog you can program many different devices.
Therefore if you plan to extend the controller family later when you got into
all the AVR stuff this one would be perfect.

You can build it by yourself and it's open source.

If you are using C or C++ program with WINAVR then just buy Arduino board and save a lot of time and money. Check the component list of arduino for BOM. If you really want to build yourself, visit this site and get schematic and firmware as well. http://arduino.cc/en/Main/Hardware . It supports Mega8, 16, 324, 1280 and 2560.

Happy MCU Programming!

It works. I am using usbasp to program atmega32.

I think you misunderstood. The firmware is written for 8 and 48, but it can program most of the avr chips

Yeah it can be changed to almost every other AVR chip. I use a ATtiny2313 (the code needs a little bit of change)
and it works very well. My board is built completely out of SMD and fits into an USB flash drive case.

If you want, you can implement some status led's. They are quite handy to find errors during the programming.

I vote for STK500 from tuxgraphics. Works great, programming available directly from AVR Studio, no need of avrdude/ponyprog, really fast and handy.

Try USB AVR LAB  http://wiki.ullihome.de/index.php/USBAVR-ISP/de.  It can also function as a simple dev. board aside from being a h/w programmer that can easily be changed from avrispmkii, jtagicemkii or usbasp.  Oh and it uses an atmega8.  I used an atmega8L with a 12 MHz crystal.
