sounds like your chip is not debug enabled, what chip are you using as you may need debug header.

plus has your pickit2 been fitted with the 4k7 pulldown resistors to help with debug mode.
look on microchip site for details on how to fit them.

i am using pic16f917 with official pickit2, red button. i think i do not need the resistor.
all used to work well till last year on the same board.

i do not use PIC very often..

Check HW oscillator or configuration (ICD debug mode, wdt, LVP program mode) - ICD interface work fine, but CPU can't run. Or power supply.

your quote makes it look like a debug header is needed for the 16F917, thats not true the parts that have a * need a headed for debug.

My bad. I was reading the list to quick. With my squinting eye Lips sealed. The 917 do not need a debug header. As many of the newer PIC variants. The debug logic is on chip

Like the project manager (Dave Hewett ex Thorn EMI) that said we could not use the 16F917 in a design for switch monitor as the 16F917 was for LCD displays "Its in the Data sheet".
