5 MB Harddisk !!!!

The Volume and Size of 5MB memory storage in 1956.

In September 1956 IBM launched the 305 RAMAC, the first computer with a
hard disk drive (HDD). The HDD weighed over a ton and stored 5MB of data.

The IBM 350 Disk Storage Unit provides storage capacity of the disk drive
was 5MB (referred to at the time as 5 million characters). It was configured
with 50 magnetic disks containing 50,000 sectors, each of which held 100
alphanumeric characters.

The problem is the water for freeze it...

it was the first hard disk and the price it was about 10.000 dollars per Mb!  Shocked

in the 1956 IBM rent only (do not sell) at 35.000 dollars/year!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked

Actually 3TB is not that much, that's the capacity of my disk array Smiley . One might say that I could make a backup copy of my brain and store it there...

You also buy a smaller warehouse with hard drives for their storage Smiley
If you save documents on those drives, you better use pen and paper Smiley it will use much less room (space)  Smiley

It's really quite amazing how far we have gone,  Imagine 5MB then now they already introduce a solid state semiconductor based harddisk in several hundred gigabytes. No moving parts.  Seek time will be in micro or even nano seconds phew!!! (scary sometimes)
