Yes.  Range extenders retransmit the packets to achieve longer range.
Long range adapters transmit with more power.

Try directional antennas as well.  Look up Cantenna or Yagi.

That would be correct.  Radio waves are radio waves, give them an appropriate antenna for the magic.

A simple way to setup  range extenders - dont have to buy one, get a regular wifi modem that can be programmed with a flavor of ddwrt. Check ddwrt on how to configure it as a repeater.

A piece of aluminum foil attached at the back of my car keyless entry remote helped increase the range by upto 15 meters. I have tried same trick by tangling wires around the router to increase range! Works well, but cannot beat the commercial extenders!
