Friends,

I notice a lot of the complete texts here range from 10MB to 48MB, whereas one of my scan pages can hit 1MB.

For scanning technical books what settings for DPI, PDF compression, etc would you recommend to get the good quality we see in our eBooks here, but keeping the filesize from getting to be outrageous?  What is the best procedure in all this?

thanks

Use the software abby fine reader to scan the book, has a powerful OCR. http://www.abbyy.com/

200~300 dpi should be sufficient for normal viewing and printing.
Choose RGB over CMYK Color space, as it has 1 Color channel less, and thus reduced file size.
Save as PDF 1.4 for more compatibility.
And, of course, grayscale mode for text only page.

Use Open book scanning software. It allows to convert the text from book into editable text on computer. I am currently using epson scan on document settings and the .pdf format works very well while keeping the file size under control and saving all pages in one .pdf file!
