Getting The Right Driver For Your LED Application
Semiconductor industry is moving from simply selling power supply regulators as LED drivers to making dedicated products that can drive LEDs in various applications. Selection of the LED driver and specifications depends on the kind of application that you are designing. This article comes handly to uderstand the concepts and point to remember while choosing right drivers for your LED applications.

Eight-Channel Data Acquisition & Logging System (April 2010) Uploaded by request.
In environments like factories, power plants and transformers in electricity substations, controlling temperature to a safe value is important. Supervisory and control systems are used to monitor the temperature and other physical parameters on a centralised machine whereby one can monitor and control the remote devices. The AVR microcontroller-based system described here does the same job of acquiring the analogue data and sending it to a remote terminal for monitoring.

Tutorial on ATmega32 Development Board (Part 2 of 2)
Part 1 of this article in March issue discussed five applications of the AVR Atmega32 microcontroller. Here we explore some more features of this microcontroller, including the external interrupt module, EEPROM module, analogue comparator module, 16-bit and 8-bit timer/counter modules and pulse-width modulation (PWM).

Microcontroller-Based Light Chaser
Light chaser can be used to create lighting animation sequences. It has been used in the past to draw attention to advertising and promotion; for example, the marquee at the local movie theater. It can also be used to produce pleasing effects for entertainment. Here we present AT89S51 microcontroller-based light chaser. Related software and codes are given as link on a text file. The software file is 35 MB+ which i found difficult to upload on the 3 servers due to low speed of my internet connection.

Remote controlled Real Time Controller with device controller. (EFY April 2007) Posted on request by santhoshaxl.
This project makes use of a TV remote control. Using RC5 coding, a real-time clock chip is set to control five different alarm settings. These settings can also be used to switch on an external device. Up to eight devices can be controlled with this project. The circuit is based on ATMEL ATmega16 microcontroller and Maxim’s DS1307 real-time clock chip.
An LCD module allows for user interface.

Automatic Water Level Controller for sump and submersible pumps.
The normal sump pump water level controller cannot be used for submersible pumps, as the method to start the motor is different. The submersible pump comes with a starter unit designed for it. To switch it on/off automatically some additional
circuits are required. Presented here is an automatic water level controller for submersible as well as sump pumps.
The essential features of this controller include:
1. Water level-sensing and control circuit
2. Dry sump/no-flow sensor and delay circuit
3. Auto timer cut-off circuit
4. Submersible pump-starter activation circuit

Programmable Industrial on-off Timer With RF Remote
In most of the modern manufacturing and processing industries, there is complete industrial automation through sophisticated hardware
and software like programmable logic controller (PLC), distributed control system (DCS), and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA). Microcontroller-based embedded systems play major role in industrial automation. One such widely used system is the Programmable timer. The major applications of programmable timer are as follows:
1. Initiating the process after desired time
2. Switching on/off the process after predetermined time
3. Providing delay in between processes
4. Applying input to on/off type open-loop control system
Depending upon the requirement of process, one can set the time of programmable timer. As the time period expires, the timer will either trigger or shut the process. Earlier there were mechanical timers that used gear assembly (same as wall clock) and mechanical contacts. But the problem with these was that due to mechanical parts and movements, they were not durable. Electronic timers have become very popular as these have more functionalities and long operating life.

Metal Detector Using Difference Resonator
Described here is a simple circuit that can detect metallic conductors in its vicinity up to a range of 25 to 30 millimetres. Concealed metallic objects such as metal foils enclosed in a plastic cover, e.g., toothpaste tubes, and small objects like refill tips made of magnetic materials too can be detected using this circuit. However, very thin metallic foils may go undetected due to a large resistance. This is a Circuit Idea and thus no PCB layout available.

Mains monitor ( Construction project EFY DEC 2011 ) Conditions like heavy load and line faults can cause the mains supply to sag or surge without warning. This can damage the appliances and equipment powered by the mains supply, unless these are automatically switched off by a protection device like the mains monitor presented here. This mains monitor continuously monitors the mains voltage and immediately disconnects power to the load if the mains voltage goes beyond the predefined limit. As the mains power returns to its normal voltage, it reconnects the load after a preset time delay. Also, it tells whether a mains disruption occurred while you were out. The acceptable voltage range and the time taken before the power is restored to the load can be set by the user.

Moving Message display on LCD (EFY DEC 2011)Moving-message displays are ideal to get your message (advertisements, greetings, etc) across in an eye-catching way. You can make an LCD show a brief moving message by interfacing it to a microcontroller. Here’s an AVR-based moving message display that uses a 16×2 LCD display incorporating HD44780. The 16×2 LCD can display 16 characters per line and there are two such lines.

Microcontroller-Based Clock Using DS1307. Digital wall clocks, table clocks and desk clocks with pointer or LCD display are readily available in the market. Here we present a clock that can be built in a small budget using AT89C2051 microcontroller. Additional feature of the clock is that the time display is visible even in the dark

Constant current battery charger. This circuit provides constant current charging for batteries like nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd), nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) and lithium-ion (Li-ion). The charger maintains constant current flow by using the property of the transistor that allows the current through the collector to be almost equal to the current through the emitter. This is a project published under "Circuit Idea" section and thus PCB layout is not available.

Solar tracking system
Generally, solar panels are stationary and do not follow the movement of the sun. Here is a solar tracker system that tracks the sun’s movement across the sky and tries to maintain the solar panel perpendicular to the sun’s rays, ensuring that the maximum amount of sunlight is incident on the panel throughout the day. The solar tracker starts following the sun right from dawn, throughout the day till evening, and starts all over again from the dawn next day. This is a project published under "Circuit Idea" section and thus PCB layout is not available.

Ultrasonic Transmitter and Receiver
Most ultrasonic transmitters and receivers are built around timer IC 555 or complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) devices. These devices are preset-controlled variable oscillators. The preset value of the working frequency is likely to drift due to mechanical vibrations or variations in temperature. This drift in frequency affects the range of transmission from the ultrasonic transducer.

Microcontroller-based intelligent traffic light system
Traffic light intervals are fixed independent of the traffic movement. So sometimes large redlight delays cause traffic congestion. Here is a microcontroller-based intelligent traffic light system that reduces the possibility of traffic jams caused by traffic light delays to an extent.
