hi all I am planing to buy an IPhone 3G S  but in Egypt it costs a lot : http://www.vodafone.com.eg/en/Personal/Promotions/iPhone3GS/Prices3GS/index.htmaround 4160 EGP or $850  i found the price on IPhone site $199 ?? i don't know why it is too expensive i knew that it is dedicated for one sim card only to work with one company really I am confused , and don't know what to do? shall i buy it online? |

Mr.byte, have you checked the cell phone section of craigslist (Cairo)? I saw a 32GB 3GS listed for EGP2200, which isn't bad. You may wanna scout around there and see if you find something good.

Yes, the iphone can be unlocked. I think one first has to jailbreak the OS then use freely available tools to unlock.
The price you see on apple's site reflects the cost of the phone with a contract from AT&T. The phone by itself will be more expensive, but when you couple it with a contract, the price is always less, as with the apple and att partnership.

The phone will be cheaper. *But* the contract with att means you will have to use their wireless services for 2 yrs. The phone will be locked to att. When you buy it from places like ebay, usually they are unlocked and are not under contract, therefore it is more expensive, because you pay for the freedom (unlocked + no contract). Apple has locked + contract for $199.

AFAIK, you cannot get it from apple @ $199 without a contract. I would suggest for you to try ebay and obtain an iphone. You don't need to purchase it unlocked or jail broken as these are things you are able to do yourself. Please also see Apple's Egypt section for the iphone. They have information on retailers. Maybe that will give you a good starting point on prices, availability, and contracts. http://www.apple.com/eg/iphone/Hope it helps. |
