What is your opinion :
which one of these compilers generates the smallest final code?
PicBasic Pro, Proton+, MikroBasic, Basic Stamp...

I'd say this question is hard or even impossible to answer authoritatively, as it will depend to a huge extent on the piece of code being compiled.  One could also inquire which compiler produces the quickest code, but it also depends on the nature of the program being compiled.

I'd suggest finding a fairly large program you've written and compiling it under each compiler.  Post the results for all to see.

Luckily, the price of larger chips has fallen over the past few years so that what once seemed like HUGE programs now occupy 1/4 or even 1/32 of the ROM in chips available for the same $$$.

Looking at the version numbers on this test and how old the versions are I would not call it a good comparision I don't know what version Swordfish (and only Pic18F) is at now but I know all the others have been improved greatly since this test(2 years old) even PicBASIC PRO has been upgraded after years of no improvements so I wouldn't use the results here and do as Oldvan suggested ,I'am sure you'll see something quite different

•Swordfish BASIC - Version 1.1.4.8
•CCS C (PCH) - Version 4.02
•MikroElectronika BASIC - Version 5.0.0.2
•PROTON BASIC- Version 3.2.5.5
•PicBASIC PRO- Version 2.47

I am wondering why David abandoned testing with PICC and PICC18 from Hi-Tech?
