Hi!
    I need to interface Proximity sensor with micro-controller but the sensor operates on 24V so tell me how can i drop 24V signal to 5V and i want to do this with the help of transistor not with opto coupler .If any schematic you have then plz give it to me

HELLO
DESIGN A VOLTAGE DIVIDER NETWORK WHOSE RATIO IS 6:1(24V:4V) FOR SAFER RANGE BELOW 5V.FOR EXAMPLE USE 5K AS R1 FROM 24V OUTPUT PIN.AND 1K FROM GROUND.CONNECT ANOTHER TWO ENDS OF RESISTORS DIRECTLY TO MICRO. OR CONNECT TO A TRANSISTOR BASE(BC547) ,EMITTER TO GND,COLLECTER PULLED UP WITH A 10K TO 5V,TAKE THE OUTPUT FROM COLLECTER TO MICRO.BUT USING A SINGLE TRANSISTER WILL PERFORM NOT OPERATION.


+24V-----^^^^^----|-----^^^^^-------GND
                 5K          | O/P      1K
                           TO MICRO
                          OR TRANSISTOR BASE.

Resistor in series to limit current, 5.1V Zener from input to ground.

If sensor is in electrically noisy environment or at different ground potential than the uC, use an optoisolator.

Some of the proximity sensors are open drain. It means that if you put a resistor between their output and GND no current will pass the resistor.
My suggestion is to first check if your sensor can provide +24V in its output.

Hi,

It is better and safer to use an opto coupler.

Why ?? you don't want to use one??

It is not better and safe to use an opto coupler. It will only make it harder to control.
