I wanted to introduce my robotics students to CAD/CAM without spending too much time or money.

We are using Google Sketchup to create 3D models.  A plugin from FlightOfIdeas allows one to export faces/surfaces.  These faces were then arranged with Inkscape and saved as a SVG file.  The SVG files can be cut using several 2D CNC machines including wood routers, plasma torches, and laser cutter.

To keep it inexpensive we are using a Cricut Expression (12"x24") to cut the designs in cardstock which can be folded and glued to create the original 3D model.

That is an interesting tricks, really. Could you shows some photo or picture?

What is the limitation? I always wonder how to make a full sphere from hard paper or plastic sheet.

The major limitation is that you are exporting faces from Sketchup into Inkscape.  It is up to you to arrange them in inkscape in a way that makes sense for you application.  In my case I arranged the surfaces such that they folded back into cube like shapes.

A sphere would be difficult.  I tried a cone and it exported as a large number of triangular faces which approximate the cone if combined.  Sketchup allows you to set how may lines are used to create an arc, I think the default is 64,

I will post images
