Imagine multiplying 37916 by 893,678 that way. 

Need large sheet of paper and a bunch of patience.

Answer is 33,884,695,048 in case you want to try it.

This might be a good graphical representation of typical multiplication method.
Some people learn to multiply, even big numbers, without knowing what the product actually is Smiley
