I've got a small character type LCD recently but can't understand it's functions and I even don't understand it's parts no.so I don't know how to use it.  I've uploaded a photo of it..any kind of clue or reference about it will help me a lot...

Hi Tahmeed,

the holes on the circuit are for fixing back-light (the circuit is the same for models with/without backlight), this one has no back-light.

Unfortunately, I have made some search, but not found any data-sheet for the LM2339SGR model.

The only thing I have found in this link : www.goldmine-elec.com/pdf/243_pgs1-49HALF.pdf is that (not very usefull):

Solomon LCD Display Small PC board with 2 ICs is marked 010611CA,LM2339SGR 97-02400.
Size of PC board is 3.3'' x 1.74'' and the LCD size is 2.71''L x 1.18''Tall.
These are brand new with pro-tective film on LCD. Has female 15 pin connector
for hookup. We can’t find data on this LCD so we are selling them cheap.
G15592     99¢ ea.

I would suggest that this not a graphic LCD, but a 2x or 4x 16 0r 20 line lcd.

the 15 pin connector is probably standard connector., see any HD44780 type display for the pinouts

the red circled vias on the right hand side are just vias, and not for connnection.

the red circled pins are probably the LED backlight pins.

the square pins are where you would connect the + and  - supply for the led

the semicircular pins above and below are to solder blob them.

the top one, obviously connects to common (gnd, or -ve)

R7  and R8 look like the current limiting resistors t or the led to be driven from 5 volts etc.

the  module seems to be a LM2339SGR

and throws up loads of google links.

I was thinking along the same lines as Old_but_Alive.

If you can't find a useful datasheet for it, and want to take a risk that you might kill it (well, if you can't find the data you might as well):

Connect Ground to pins 1 and 3, and 5V to pin 2. You should see a line of character blocks if they are the correct connections (for an HD44780-compatible display).

I've got a non-standard and unknown LCD 'PC-1601AR' from a fax machine some time ago too.
It was an 16x1 type plus some graphical symbols.
It has a 2x12 pin header which is mostly used for the graphical symbols.

To identify the pin-out, i have used the pin-out of the die, in my case i used the datasheet from the KS0066U controller.

First you have to identify GND. In most cases this is connected to cage of the LCD also.

Locate the pin which is also connected to GND and trace it to the black blob.

This will be the reference for the other pins.

You can simply identify the other pins by counting the traces (which are connected to the header)
around the black blob in reference to the GND.

6 GND, 7 VDD, 8 Contrast, 11 DB5, 12 DB7
18 RS, 19 R/W, 20 En, 23 DB4, 24 DB6
DB0 to DB3 are N/C

Found the answer.

Is an Standard HD44780 based LCD such as LM2338SGR

It uses the Standard HD44780 Pinout

You just need to check the order by finding witch one is the GND, and that would be PIN 1..  It should be connected cage of the LCD.
