Hi, I used this one, very easy interface to analog port of any PIC or other micro. 5 V powered.
I do not remember the cost but I am shure it was not steep.

if you want to measure dc current just use a low ohm resistor thats in series with with your gear and measure the voltage over the resistor with mcu or other komponents, its very simple

Fully Integrated, Hall Effect-Based Linear Current Sensor IC
with 3 kVRMS Voltage Isolation and a Low-Resistance Current Conductor

Yes sir, I agree with sphinx.

Got this from futurlec, 0.1ohm 5W 5% Wirewound Resistor ( US$ 0.2 each )
For your 2 Amps the dissipated power ( heat ) would be in the range of 2*2x0.1 = 0.4 Watt and the Voltage drop 2x.01 = 0.2 Volt
Used these on output line of Battery chargers, no problem at all.

To Measure current from high-side there are some IC like :
  Zetex products: ZXCT1009, ZXCT1010, ZXCT1081 ...
  From Linear Technologie: LTC6101, LTC6101HV, LTC6103 ...
  From Maxim: MAX4172 ...
  Other: TSC101, SC310, FAN4010 ...

  APPLICATION NOTE 105 Current Sense Circuit Collection (See attachement)

For AC lowest cost is current transformer, for DC shunt, if isolation is needed Hall effect
