Just to pass some advice regarding using optical mouse as positioning tools. Optical mouse can retrieve information of displacement without problem when user do not demand for precision movement. However, One will also notice that optical mouse report different displacement reading for different surface texture, color and reflectivity. In fact, variation of height also cause changes in the displacement reading. Eventually, one will find that, using mouse for positioning purposes, will only be suitable in a flat, clean and fix color test field, but not in practical field.

you can open an optical mouse and use it's ic.
usalay they have pam101 or h2000 chip and both of them work much like the same.
they have an ps2 output and another x-y quadrature encoder pulse which i think is the easiest way to connect to your micro and calculate the positions.
