There is some good information here http://www.captain.at/electronic-atmega-mmc.php It explains about SD cards in that artical and how to read and write to them with a micro controller,

SD Card can communicate with SPI interface.
There have some book that expand about SD card interface with PIC. If you search for
"Programming 16-Bit PIC Microcontrollers" in this borad you can find.

Note: This book also give the concept of FAT16.

Some time ago i downloaded a proteus sim with a sd card and as it turned out its from Sonsivri.com .

If you want to read/write from the SD card, you must know the SPI protocol, that's it.

However, If you want to make it compatible with windows (linux, etc..) you must adhere to the FAT
format which is very complex. You can either spend a year learning it, or you can use off the shelf
chips that contain the fat stack.

Alfat is one of several companies that create a system where you communicate using DOS-like
commands and UART to write the code and the chip handles the FAT.
