Can anybody explain me what is the wattage of Resistors. such as 1/4 Watt, 1/8 Watt, 1Watt etc.

is it true that 1 Watt resistor consumes more power then 1/4 watt resistor...?


is it true that SMD components consumes less power then nomral axial or leaded components...?

Hi,
wattage of Resistors is the upper limit of how much power you can apply to the resistor
before it get destroyed.

In other words if you apply more power than the resistor is rated for it will go up in flames.

SMD components might be rated for less power because of their physical size but the same rule applies as with their axial equivalent when it comes to what power they are rated for.

If you apply power beyond the upper limit you most certainly will see smoke and/or fire..

(Fire is usually not good inside electronic appliances)

Resistors do not consume anything...they are used to resist current flow in a circuit, if too much current
is allowed through a circuit... heat will be generated thus allowing more current to pass in a situation called
thermal run-away, eventually the circuit will self destruct.

Two things to consider when selecting resistors...

1- How much resistance (in ohms) is needed to control the current.

2 -How much power (in watts) the resistor should work with.


(Every component is deliberately made with smoke inside them...the trick is not to let it out!)

Most of the answers you have got from the guys above , Regarding the SMD resistances , they are better till 1/4 Watt power handeling range above it , its less reliable.
