HI my friend Grin
Then you can use mikrobasic library with  MMC samles and PIC18FXX
is very easy use....
only need  MMC, PIC18 , and compiler

Multi Media Card Library
The Multi Media Card (MMC) is a flash memory card standard. MMC cards are currently available in sizes up to and including 1 GB, and are used in cell phones, mp3 players, digital cameras, and PDA’s.

mikroBasic provides a library for accessing data on Multi Media Card via SPI communication. This library also supports SD(Secure Digital) memory cards

Hmm , very interesting Topic.
On one application I ended myself buying a Alfat chip based device. US$ 39.-

Did ALL tests with MikroBasic and MikroC , no luck !! It seems that the libraries are very sensitive upon the brand of the card you use.  Sorry about that. I even broke an brand new A-DATA 512 Mb MMC card ( no longer could format ) .  Sector access works good but no FAT handling...

I am not an expert , maybe my circuits have errors ??   Roll Eyes ,... but if sector access works ,..... hmmm. Don t know for sure.

On the other hand , look on Proton`s Forums , they already have developed a set of MACROS that will handle FAT access on MMC cards BUT -------> you will need last version of the Software to handle the macro extension..... sorry again.

 Huh

I second very strongly : get yourself an ALFAT or similar chip artifact....

Just to document the topic a little bit.

So long
Greetings
