I think that from Atmel you get samples only through distributors.

From my experience ... It's very hard to get sample from Atmel ( Atmel pass to their distributor to give a sample) ... their distributor ask many question. I asked about 3 times ... end up with frustration. It's diffrent with Microchip ...

I've never had a problem getting anything from Microchip or any other manufacture(dallas, max, nat, linear) but Atmel chips must be pure gold.I tried 3 times too with no luck so I don't and won't use them

we used thousands of AVR mcu in our company. and I never get a free sample from ATMEL! we can only get the sample from distributor but it takes a loooonnnngggg time to get it. so we just goto Digikey buy a few pcs for our prototype. It's cheap anyway. It is much easier to get the AVR mcu sample in some countries like China.

I have ordered some samples from the Atmel website about a year and a half earlier and I received those in about two weeks with no problem. (only four pieces each)
Recently haven't tried any, Will try to order some now again and post the status here later.

I've managed to get a few samples from Atmel, but not very quick. It would seem best to get the local distributor to give you some, but you probably will not get much joy there unless they think you are going to use quite a few of them. If you have already done a project using atmel or microchip that made it into production, then it is worth asking for samples even if a totally differnt device, as you can say you are redesigning//uograding ect. For small quantities of devices for 'home' projects it can be easier to use one of the catalogue companies who stock them. Good Luck, Otter

My order for samples have been accepted by Atmel mentioning that a local dealer will contact you within three days. I have order few 8051 based and few AVR MCUs as samples.
Lets see if I am lucky this time as well.

I got the same "a local dealer will contact you within three days." each time when I apply for the sample, and never get any response.

Atmels site has changed, there is now a form for you to fill in at http://www.atmel.com/forms/Samples.asp . I am not gonna try just yet, keep me updated please. Fedex is witholding a package from TI b'cos I need to fill in some import information. Local law here in SAfrica allows only 3 packages a year b4 they stop you and you need to then register as an importer.

It is to your "local rep" not to you directly. your "local rep" will contact you !!! They never contact me.

Dont ever think about that. Atmel MCU are Cheap , why dont just buy some and start writing codes and making fun? you would have learned alot even IF the samples do Arrive.
