Title: No wonder the Mods get p'd off.
Post by: hexadec on June 11, 2017, 07:56:17 19:56
I was astounded to notice that the meagre amount of stuff I've shared on this board has been down loaded 594 times.
Now don't get me wrong I'm here for the community not the glory but I've received 68 'thanks' for those 594 downloads and it's often the same people!
Are people here just for what they can grab?

I wonder how many 'thanks' I would have received if it was allowed to post 'thank-yous' and they added to your post count. :o

Just sayin'  :P

What are your thoughts on saying thanks?

PS for the sceptics I always push the 'Thank-you' button.

I try to use the thank you button, but not always I remember it.
Some people wouldn't know that the button exists.
And the others... you know.

@Beltza

That's a very valid point but I'd still expect more like a 50/50 downloads to thanks ratio.
Maybe I'm just being naive. :D

Yes it's a pity, there was talk about you have to click the thank you button. before you see the link.

Myself I would like Sonsivri to write a script of who downloads links, but the truth is it would be a false thank you.
even that as its flaws,  like if you look at the link, it don't show as a download, so stats are most likely higher that what you say.

as a mod bbarney and myself have 1/3rd of users on a mute.
most will go on the next purge.

this is funny, other forums hide the link, till you press thank you, some of them also require to have, for example 50 thanks to allow you to see the links. So, no more inactive members around... but my opinion is really different, if you are married for quite some time and your wife no longer loves you, or vice versa, and deeply in your heart you know very well that there is nothing to fix it, it turns out to be the same as when asking people to share and be active, so don't bother yourself that much :- )

I just think it's common courtesy and adds to the feeling of community.

It's always p'd me off that there are so many members of every forum who are just there for what they can get and give nothing.

Anyway, sorry if I've brought up a dodgy subject...:D

I've also muted and deleted posts from inactive members, requesting new links, cracks and complaining they don't work. Yes it is sad that there people out there who take and no give.
Like pickit Said people would give false thankyous just to build them up so they could download the stuff. We have a lot of great members here or share some really good stuff.

Maybe the answer is the Mods get a new Button, the ability to delete accounts.
Maybe if they get deleted, they may want to hold on to a new account next time.

I'm new to this forum but I think the world of politeness is to say THANK YOU when they give you something, no matter what the value of this thing (moral, intellectual or monetary) but I may be 'Another generation (soon 70 years)

that's the criteria for being a valued member - being an old bugger.

70... 66... yeah, not that far off myself.

Your 1:10 thanks:grabs ratio is about what it's always been, I've noticed. That's the way people are. I largely stopped visiting a few other places long ago, because they were becoming very much 'give me, give me' orientated. They were not even sites like this... just technical sites with no software 'sharing'. Many people just want to be breast fed with everything they need, for life it seems.

Not that I've anything against breast feeding myself. My local doctors' surgery has a sign in the foyer, "You are welcome to breast feed here". Every time I ask though, I just get a dirty look from the receptionists  ???

Point is, I would at least say, "Thank you" afterwards.

At least you know the thanks you do get are genuine, not just for the sake of having to click it to get their feed. That's the way I look it it.

Having to say thank you before seeing the link would be good, as long as there is the ability to remove the thanks afterwards if it turns out that the link is of no use. ;)

I don't think forcing people to say thanks really works. At least with the present system the 'thanks' are honest and really meant.

I'm in it purely for the street cred...
No , seriously I couldn't care less if people thanked me...
If they can't find the time to say thanks , then obviously we are married and there's nothing we do to fix it.

How about - in the link.txt files simply add "Please remember to click the thanks button" on the forum. :)

often I only thank after checking it out and making sure whatever the download is actually works and is worthwhile (sometimes it's hard to tell).

but, I'm only a half way dead bugger, not a 75% dead bugger like some of these guys.

I agree with Gallymimu.

I only give a thank you if I find it works, and is useful.

sometimes the text links are for download sites where you need to login/give your details
