Title: where to buy cheap rivet for pcb
Post by: leptro on October 25, 2011, 08:49:45 08:49
Hello all,
There is a famous UK electronic seller (megauk) that propose  0.4mm rivet for pcb, mainly for double side pcb via through hole plating.

The rivet itself cost 23 £ and chipping cost 38£ to my country.

You see the problem.
So have you an alternative way to get this Favorit rivet?

Thank you in advance.

MAYBE, go to a hardware/hobby shop and get some 0.4mm brass tubes.
Chop them down to the required lengths and use as rivet.

Personally I use a short piece of wire and solder both sides.
Much cheaper and easier to get  :P

Years ago there were some communications equipment manufacturers that used small rivets instead of plated-thru holes. After about 6 months all their equipment started failing because when the rivets were popped into place the head of the rivet cut a ring into the copper of the board. I don't know if it was mechanical stress or whatever the reason, but the copper pulled away (or the rivet loosened) causing electrical failures.

Save some resistor leads and drill a small hole, soldering to both sides and trim, as Parmin pointed out.

i also use small wire but the result is not very nice but functionnal.

The rivet seam to be nice and they are mecanical press in the hole, and the risque to lost one is really small.

Hi,

the rivets are indispensable when you are dealing with 2 sides pcb, and you have some connectors on the boards (you have to solder some pins of this connectors on both sides). And of course, we are talking about the developings, so the final boards have to be done on professional enviroments.
I also tried to find some other suppliers some years ago, but I found just the company you mentioned and the LPKF, but the second one has aprox. same prices. So you have to invest this amount one the beginning, or you have to play with some other possibilities us I do, and wich was mentioned before (to cut some little tubes).

Lets inform us, If you find other solutions.
Best wishes,P

they are more common

hello froggy, with 0.4mm rivet, i can use via with a diameter of 0.8mm drilled at 0.6mm.

with a 0.8mm river, i have to use  via with a diameter of 1.2mm drilled at 1mm and i think it's too big. won't you?

what is your experience with 0.8mm rivet?
