obstacle avoidance on ship

I would like to design a system that will be located on an autonomous small ship and will be able to avoid obstacles.
I am thinking of using microcontrollers and ultrasonic sensors but I don't know what is the max distance detection that I can achieve with this kind of sensors.
if anyone can suggest the right ultrasonic sensors for this purpose or even any other technology to implement this system please advice.

Look into the HB100 microwave module. I read it has a max 20m detection range. It can also measure high resolution on near by objects.

I am curious about this myself, I had no experience so far with sea surface and it's million reflections.
What is the best way to detect obstacles for a small ship? I guess small ships need to avoid small radar targets as well, yes?
