before microchip released 18f series 16f877A was a completely power packed controller, in the sense tht it had good program memory, plenty of peripherals, built in eeprom... so many tutorial files and application notes were written for 16f877a. But the beauty of microchip controllers is tht these application note for 16f877 can be used for any 16f/18f series controllers with minimal or no modifications.

I recommend you to replace 16f877 with 16F887. It is cheaper than 887 but is compatible and has more I/O pin.

i agree with bxngoc. 16F887 has more I/O pins and has internal 4Mhz OSC.
@abcabc
16F877 is the cheaper and basic micro for beginners. So at start of the micro electronic, all use PIC and so 16F877...
